We invite passionate volunteers to join us in building our vision at Khula Dharma on a short or long term basis. We only take volunteers for a minimum of 2 weeks at this stage.
We offer you accommodation and community living in exchange for 25 hours of your effort and talents!
We ask for a contribution of R350 per week per person which includes dinners and produce from the garden as is available. Breakfast and lunches are for your own account.
If you need transport to or from the farm we try to match that with a towntrip we frequently make but otherwise we have a transport service which costs R700 one way from the airport or East London area.
Volunteers will have so many learning opportunities (for example in permaculture, regenerative farming, natural building, holistic cattle grazing, herbal medicine, community living) and the experience of our unique lifestyle.
Volunteers are required to work approximately 5 hours per day during weekdays. Tasks are constantly changing but may include food production (watering, weeding, making cuttings, planting seeds); upgrading of our facilitates (painting, fixing, woodwork) and general cooking, organizing, welcoming guests and cleaning.
Volunteers are encouraged to explore and enjoy our beautiful land and participate in our community gatherings, yoga, meditation, hikes, beach trips or just to relax and read a book from our large and diverse collection.
We want to create a vibrant atmosphere of knowledge and skills sharing and encourage volunteers to contribute their own ideas and passions to enhancing our space and collective vision!
During your stay as a volunteer at Khula Dharma, you will be provided with simple rustic accommodation, i.e. a single or shared rooms or one of the traditional Xhosa huts. Facilities include outdoor compost toilets and warm showers plus the use of wifi at the main house. Bedding is included and a weekly chance to wash your clothes.
We provide plant-based communal dinners using food grown from the farm as much as possible. As dinners are communal, volunteers assist with cooking and cleaning up after meals. Please refrain from bringing any animal products such as meat & dairy onto the property and let us know upfront if you have any allergies and dietry requirements.
- Walking shoes and socks – if you have space gumboots are useful for rainy weather and to protect your feet
- Gardening gloves
- A sun hat
- Clothes for working in the garden
- Swimming gear
- Biodegradable toiletries and laundry soap/powder (you will hand-wash your own clothes, no machine here!)
- Musical instruments/books and any other equipment for activities during your off time (we do have a lovely book collection available on the farm)
